2012 VSAIA Awards for Excellence

Five awards juries selected 19 project out of 150 submissions for 2012 Virginia Society/AIA Awards for Excellence recognition in the categories of Architecture, Contextual Design, Historic Preservation, Residential Design, and Interior Design. Presented by IMAGINiT Technologies.

Jury Comment: Light and space flow through the plan of this elegant, modern home, which, as a well-proportioned, resource-efficient composition, creates a comfortable place in the woods.

Jury Comment: A sophisticated professional office building inside and out, this design displays a crisp material palette that reinforces the solid/void engagement between interior spaces and the site.

Jury Comment: Support spaces provide acoustical buffers, and the latticed lyrical walls create continuity and variety. This complex replaces a former asphalt-lot campus edge with very good architecture.

Jury Comment: Clear in concept and exemplary in detailing, this building and its reference-rich courtyard are appropriate to the center’s program. Inventive and playful, the building is at once iconic and contextual.

Jury Comment: At a glance the subtle regional cues of this project say “Maryland.” Siting and massing are excellent, the plan is smart, and the view down the loggia to the water is captivating.

Jury Comment: This is a great modern interpretation of the under-recognized open-air pavilion. It evokes old state park shelters as it nestles into the hillside toward the water. The building will only get better with age.

Jury Comment: In this reactivation of three major historic spaces, there is balanced attention to restoration and sustainability, from historic finishes to new skylights that bring daylight into lower levels.

Jury Comment: The exterior and interior restoration is excellent and additions are distinctive and sensitive of the Secretary of Interior Standards. The repurposed interior successfully retains a residential charm.
